The Photos You Need to Take | Grandparents and Grandkids

Why I Love Photographing Grandparents and Grandkids

Do the grandparents and grandkids in your life live in different cities? Mine do. My parents live a five-hour drive away in St. Louis.

We try to see them as much as we can, but the reality is life is busy. Having three children means my family has a hectic schedule. Between school, dance, swimming, plays and sports, our weekends don’t always belong to us.

So, when we make the trek to St. Louis or my parents come to town, I make sure I document every minute my parents and children are together. My children are now 10, 12 and 13. As they have aged, the visits with my parents have changed too. In the early days, just getting to town and surviving seemed like an accomplishment. We would go to Demun Park, the St. Louis Zoo, maybe hit the Magic House.

Lunch out with GrandpaNow that they are older, my children are capable of being out from dawn to dusk, soaking up all the opportunities and adventures St. Louis has to offer. Want to know the bad news? As my children have grown older, so have my parents. My parents can’t spend the whole day on their feet anymore.

Finding Ways to Connect

Because my kids are always off running around having adventures or on the couch with their heads buried in their electronics, getting them to have meaningful interaction with their grandparents has become more of a challenge. Having a meal together has become a cherished time for my kids and parents.  Sometimes I need to prod the conversation a little to get things going. I like to ask my dad to tell the girls about how his parents put him on a public bus BY HIMSELF with a ticket pinned to his shirt to go to a World Series Cardinals game when he was 8-years-old. And I ask my mom to tell the girls what it was like to be in middle school in the late 1940’s. Now, staying at the table long after the food has been eaten to hear stories about Nonnie and Grandpa’s childhood has become a favorite part of our day.

So what I have realized is it’s becoming more important that my children and their grandparents just get time to connect, it doesn’t really matter where or how. And if they need a little “talking points” inspiration from my carefully placed questions, so be it! I am happy to help get the conversation going.

I make sure to take my camera out for all of these get togethers. Because life moves too fast. The kids are growing up at a rapid clip. And my parents continue to age. But I want my children to always remember the precious moments we carved out for them with my parents. I want them to have pictures to go with those stories of the time they went to the Science Center or when grandpa took them to lunch at Crown Candy for a special lunch outing.

I want them to remember they were loved and cherished by their grandparents, long after they are no longer here to tell them. I want them to have albums they can show THEIR children some day.

Want Some Help?

And if you feel like your camera or phone camera won’t do the situation justice, call me! I would love to spend time following your children and their grandparents around, documenting their beautiful relationship. The best thing about these photo shoots is you won’t end up with a bunch of static, awkward photos of people standing there looking at the camera. I call my style of photography “family storytelling” or “family photojournalism.” I am very passionate about capturing this beautiful relationship for future generations to enjoy.

So, next time the grandparents come over, let’s make a plan to photograph them. Or next time you go to visit the grandparents, I can follow you. I may be a Chicago family photographer, but I am available to travel out of town to do your grandparent photography shoot. Especially anywhere near St. Louis! Give me a call at 773-510-7105 and let’s talk about it.

Interactive family photos with the grandparents and grandkids might be a new idea for you, but I promise you will never regret having these grandparent photos taken. Let’s have fun with this new twist on family photos!

Family Photojournalism

Family Photojournalism| Chicago IL Photographer |Disney Surprise Scavenger Hunt

What is family photojournalism? Family photojournalism is what some people like to call “Day in the Life” photography. A family invites me into their lives to document a moment in time that they would like to remember. It can be as simple as Saturday morning pancakes, bedtime rituals, or cheering on your child at a sporting event. Or sometimes, I am invited into someone’s home to document a special memory in the making.

Family photojournalism shoots are great for families who don’t want the pressure of picking out L.L. Bean catalogue -worthy outfits. Who don’t want to bribe, cajole, and scold their children into sitting still and behaving for the camera. It takes all the stress out of a typical photo shoot because I am focused on getting pictures of children being themselves, not a prettified, sitting-still version of themselves.

I know, I know, you take lots of snapshots with your iPhone of your everyday moments. Those are great too! But wouldn’t it be nice to have a photographer capturing the precious connections between you and your child? Having a professional photographer make artwork of your everyday is a truly a gift that will be cherished for generations. Your children’s children will love to see their parents’ lives in action.

And getting parents IN the photo instead of just behind the camera? Even better.

When you look back at your family photos in 20 years, what will be more meaninful to you?  An album of photos that document your connections and moments (family photojournalism)? Or what you looked like in matching outfits in a beautiful background (standard portrait photography)?

Day in the Life

The “Z” family invited me over to photograph “the big reveal” of telling their children about an upcoming trip to Disney. M and K collected clues around the yard until they found the big box in the backyard. Watching the building excitement from one clue to the next was a blast!

Doing Fort Sheridan family photography is always a blast. And I couldn’t think of a better family to photograph at the Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve than the “A” family.

I think this was our fourth shoot together. I am so honored that they have chosen me for their family photos, as well as their bat mitzvah photography, over the years. It’s been such a pleasure to document this family’s memories!

The girls are maturing into such beautiful young women, inside and out.

Originally, I was supposed to photograph Jessica as part of her bat mitzvah package. Doing a fashionista shoot with a bat mitzvah girl is so much fun.

But her parents really wanted an updated family photo, so we worked it out. We did some fun, edgy individual shots of the girls in downtown Highland Park, IL, as well as captured the whole family together at Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve.

When we would walk from one location to the next, the girls would pull out their phones, frantically thumb-typing. Mom “A” informed me they were checking the Bears-Seahawks game. Being huge Bears fans themselves, Mom and Dad loved the regular updates!

As usual, Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve in Lake Forest, Illinois, does not disappoint. We all enjoyed the beautiful walking path through the forest. And who doesn’t enjoy going on a beach walk?! Even more fun, you can bring a dog to this beach!

We are so lucky to have such natural beauty around us in Chicago.

While fall offers great opportunities for beautiful foliage, I still love photographing families at any time of year! Especially when I get a chance to do family photojournalism shoot. When I photograph a family who is interested in documenting their memories or family rituals, we don’t need to worry if the weather is perfect outside. All I need is a family who wants to remember Saturday morning pancakes, bedtime and bath time, cheering on a son or daughter at an event, or any other little family ritual that tells one of your family stories. Check out these family photojournalism shoots here and here.

In twenty years, what memory would you like to enjoy having captured in a photo album? What story in pictures would be fun for your children to show THEIR future children?
